Interesting facts about Strathbogie

In the central highlands of Victoria lies the picturesque and charming region of Strathbogie. Here are some interesting facts about this beautiful rural area:

1. Strathbogie was originally known as Euroa Plains, until it was renamed in the mid-19th century. The name comes from the Scottish Gaelic term "strath" meaning valley, and "bogie" meaning bog or peatland.

2. The Strathbogie Ranges, which dominate the landscape, are part of a long-extinct volcanic range and are among the oldest mountains in the world.

3. The region has a rich agricultural heritage, with pastoral activity dating back to the 1850s. Today, Strathbogie is known for its beef, lamb, and wool production, as well as its vineyards and olive groves.

4. The town of Euroa, in the heart of Strathbogie, was one of the sites of the infamous Ned Kelly Gang's bank robberies in 1878. Today, a mural depicting the event can be seen in the main street.

5. Strathbogie is an important birdwatching destination, with over 180 species of birds recorded in the region. Rare species such as the swift parrot and regent honeyeater can be spotted in the Strathbogie Ranges.

6. The Strathbogie Forest is home to a population of the threatened brush-tailed phascogale, a small arboreal marsupial with a distinctive prehensile tail.

7. Strathbogie is also known for its recreational opportunities, with the region offering hiking and cycling trails, fishing spots, and scenic picnicking areas. The Euroa Butter Factory, now an arts and cultural centre, also attracts visitors with its regular exhibitions and events.

8. The Strathbogie region has a long and proud history of community activism and environmental stewardship, with many local groups working to protect the region's natural assets and promote sustainable practices.

9. The Strathbogie Tableland is an important part of the Goulburn Broken Catchment, and is home to the renowned Seven Creeks Wetland, a Ramsar-listed site of international significance for migratory birds.

10. Strathbogie is a close-knit and welcoming community, and its unique blend of natural beauty, history, and culture make it a fascinating place to visit and explore.
